Genealogy Assistance

Information from vital records is open to the public 100 years from the date of the event.

Individuals who may access vital records less than 100 years old include:
  • The person named on the record
  • The person’s spouse or registered domestic partner
  • The parent(s) named on the record
  • Descendants of the person named on the record
  • Registrant’s legal custodian, guardian, conservator or respective authorized representative
    (includes attorney, physician or funeral director)
  • Genealogists who have a Maine CDC

The cost of a certified copy is $15.00.

The "Great Fire of Norway" occurred in 1894.
Therefore, many town records were lost.

  4. * They have an excellent collection of filmed vital records, including many old town records, and the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census enumeration schedules. The Archives also has excellent facilities for researchers. The Maine State Library, located in the same building, has an extensive collection of published family genealogies.
